Grandpa's Gift1. Grandpa's attitude towards money tells us that he is generous. he believes money is to be shared and enjoyed by others: "He threw most of it away." He likes to make others happy by helping them financially, "what was his was yours". Grandpa feels that money is not worth much in itself, it's what you do with it that counts. This suggests that monetary value is not nearly as important as moral values. The metaphor "in another/currency, richest of all" shows that Grandpa is rich both as a person and in his values. (E)
2. The link between the title and the words "another currency" is that "Grandpa's Gift" is his generosity of spirit. Grandpa shared whatever he had and in doing so he taught his grandchild the value of sharing and being generous to others. The words "another currency" suggest that money is worthless and unimportant. Our human values are what matter in life. By giving his physical wealth away, Grandpa is 'rich' in spirit. Grandpa gave something precious to his grandchild, and it was of greater worth than the money. (E) BACK TO QUESTION BACK TO Y11 UNFAMILIAR TEXT Duffy, J., & Ford, C. (2006).
